Mary E. Maguire, MD

I grew up in Denver, went to college at Colorado State University and received my medical school degree and Pediatric training at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. I decided to be a pediatrician when I was 8 years old — influenced by my love of my pediatrician, my then desire to have 10 children of my own, and my amazement that by eating a polio vaccine-infused sugar cube at school, I would be spared a fate incurred by my mother: spending a summer in an iron lung for poliomyelitis.

I became a pediatrician, worked with my mentor, and had just three children of my own after marrying a molecular biologist/virologist nearly 30 years ago. Our oldest son graduated from the University of Miami in music performance and is currently a free-lance percussionist in the Bay Area. Our middle son is attending the University of Denver as an Environmental Science major and swimming as a varsity athlete. Our youngest daughter is finishing her senior year in high school and will be studying large animal science in a pre-vet program at college. In our spare time, my husband and I enjoy experiencing eclectic music in San Francisco, attending swim meets in Denver, and mucking stalls in Aurora.

Favorite Colorado Activities:
I thrive by spending time alone and working out in the pool as many times a week as I can garner. I thrive by spending time with my family in whatever way possible, usually by cooking and sharing a meal. My time with friends is precious and priceless - usually spent walking in one of the Denver parks, sharing laughs and shedding worries. As a family, we enjoy biking and hiking and camping throughout Colorado in all seasons. We listen to all styles of music at home, which adds a light spirit to our daily lives. I am a board member for the Colorado Honor Band Association in Denver and have volunteered in various ways at my children's schools throughout the years, the most fun being making sno-cones at Field Day and chaperoning After-Prom.
