It is Random Acts of Kindness Week!
Remember the little craze back in the 90's about random acts of kindness? While it may not be something you hear about as often as you used to, the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation has been going strong since 1995! The Foundation inspires people to practice kindness and to pass it on to others, and Random Acts of Kindness Week is here!
If you thought practicing random acts of kindness is a silly practice, think again. As the Foundation says on it's site: "While violence can demoralize a community, kindness can empower and uplift it. Kindness is one of our most important human tools in connecting with one another, enhancing the emotional climate around us and bringing good into the world." Just think about a time when someone did something kind and unexpected for you. How did it make you feel? How did it change your day? How did it change your behavior? I remember a Christmas when the driver in front of me paid my toll on the toll road. It was such a pleasant surprise it left a smile on my face all day. And I felt grateful, so I made a point of thanking all the folks who helped me at check-in, and so on at the airport. I hope their days were brightened as much as mine.
The website will have a new idea every day this week for how to practice kindness. What a great activity to do with your children--it takes so little to be kind, but the reward, both for the person receiving the kindness, as well as the person giving it, is great. Today the site suggests smiling (sincerely) at 5 strangers today--that simple smile can help them realize that somebody care about them. Give it a try!
