Cindy, This One's for You!

Joyce Gottesfeld, MD | Ob/Gyn | Jun 10, 2011 | 1 Comments | Print

The other day one of my delightful patients came in to see me for her health maintenance exam.  She has been my patient for years, and over those years she has had a variety of gynecologic issues we have dealt with, but by far, her biggest health issue has been her weight.  She knew this and really wanted to lose weight.  In fact, one year she might come in having lost 30 or 40 pounds and hoping to keep up the trend, only to have gained it back plus some the next time I saw her.  It was a constant battle and frankly, it was bringing her down.

Her main issue was an issue many women deal with.  She was busy: busy with her home and her life and caring for other people-family, etc.  Someone always needed her and she always felt she was the one who needed to step up and take care of whatever needed taking care of in the family.  It left her busy and drained-- physically, emotionally, psychologically.

But she really did want to lose weight, and we would talk about it, about how she had to “take care of No. 1,” how if she wasn’t taking care of herself, how could she take care of others?  She knew all of this, but when the phone rang, or duty called, it all went out the window.

But this year....well, this year was different.  Some things had come to a resolution in her life and she knew, it was time.  She didn’t tell me.  And I didn’t look at her recorded weight before I went into the exam room, I just walked in.

Who was that???  I hardly recognized her.  But I did recognize her smile, and it was sure a big smile on this day!  Cindy lost 160 pounds -- about half her body weight.! She also had some other new things going on in her life and she was making time for herself, to be active every day.  She was eating better and she felt great.

Ok, I admit it, I cried (I’m a little tearful right now telling the story....)

I knew how much she had wanted this and I could tell how happy she was.  I can tell she is going to keep the weight off because she didn’t just lose weight, she changed how she thinks about her life and her health.  She can do so much more now that she is healthier-more for herself, more with her partner and her family, and I’m just so happy for her.

So, congratulations, Cindy!  This one's for you!!!

What a great story! The weight rollercoaster is something that applies to so many of us and it's encouraging to know that it is possible to beat it. Congratulations to Cindy!
