Pertussis, You Are Not Welcome Here!
January 2012 | Joyce Gottesfeld, MD
Pertussis, or whooping cough, is making a comeback.
Kids get immunized against pertussis starting at 2 months of age (the DTP vaccine), but most hospitalizations and deaths due to pertussis occur in babies less than 2 months of age.
That’s right, I said DEATHS!
Can you imagine your sweet little newborn catching pertussis and DYING?
Well, one of my... Continued

New Year, new goals.
January 2012 | Meghan Dukes, DC, MSPT
Every year people everywhere make a big effort to better themselves personally and set New Year’s resolutions. Unfortunately, a lot of people tend to be their own worst enemies, setting unreasonably high goals that are nearly impossible to attain.
As we head full steam into 2012, here are a few suggestions for some health goals that can also help alleviate back pain. They... Continued

Don't you love temper tantrums?
January 2012 | Mark Groshek, MD
Pediatricians answer all kinds of questions from parents, from how much sleep a baby should get to whether green poop is a problem to questions about how to help a teen with a drug addiction, and almost anything between those extremes. I think one of the most common questions is "how do handle a temper tantrum?" ... Continued

Where is your evacuation plan?
January 2012 | Mark Groshek, MD
Back in March, after the tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan, I wrote about having a disaster plan. The horrible things the Japanese went through really made me realize that the unexpected can happen. But I have to confess that it all still seemed a little abstract to me. After all, I'm certainly not going to have to... Continued

The Waiting Game
January 2012 | Joyce Gottesfeld, MD
I have a friend who is pregnant. 38 1/2 weeks pregnant to be exact.
I really want her to have her baby. Now.
She is my age, so not a spring chicken. She’s not a first time mom, so she knows what she is in for. Without giving too much detail, I’ll just say, life’s been hard for her, and the arrival of this baby is much anticipated.... Continued

How was 2011 for you?
It was a big year in OB/GYN at Kaiser, Colorado. We started delivering more deliveries at Sky Ridge Medical Center, a convenience for our patients who live down south. No more worries about rapid labors and deliveries done by nervous fathers during a frantic car ride up I-25 (didn’t really happen, but a scary thought!).
2011 saw growth in our... Continued

Happy & Healthy Holidays!
December 2011 | Meghan Dukes, DC, MSPT
Even though we know this is supposed to be one of the happiest times of the year, time after time it seems to end up being one of the most stressful. As much as we all love the fun and festivities of the season, from the shopping, to the entertaining and all that family time, the stress just creeps right in.
Why worry about the stress now? Can’t we all just wait for our... Continued

A riveting story
December 2011 | Mark Groshek, MD
I heard an amazing interview yesterday on Colorado Matters on Colorado Public Radio. Ryan Warner interviewed John Moyer, a retired pediatrician from Evergreen. Dr. Moyer's son Andy died on Christmas Eve 1992, after a skiing accident. Andy's parents decided to donate his organs, and were eventually ... Continued

Once a Cesarean, always a Cesarean?
December 2011 | Joyce Gottesfeld, MD
That’s what they used to say anyway.
When I was a resident (back in the stone age, before cars and TV, as my kids would say), it was just the opposite - we let almost anyone who had had a previous Cesarean Section (C/S) try to go through labor.
The problem is that if the uterus has a previous scar on it, it may be weakened and the scar may come apart in... Continued
